Clay soil moves
Much of North Texas sits on expansive clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Slab foundations move a little with it, and rigid grout cracks first.
Movement joints help
Flexible caulked joints at corners and along the tub let tile move without cracking. Many older bathrooms do not have them.
Hard water
Hard water leaves mineral spots on glass and fixtures. A good squeegee habit and a protective coating on glass help.
Water behind the tile
Grout is not waterproof. Without a membrane behind it, water reaches the wall and the tile loosens.
